The Maldives is undergoing a historic transformation in IP law. With the enactment of the Maldives Intellectual Property Office Act 2025 (Law No. 12/2025) and the Trademark Act 2025 (Law No. 19/2025), it will establish its first comprehensive IP registration system, replacing the informal cautionary notice regime with a robust, internationally-aligned framework. The IP Office Act will come into effect on 1 January 2026, establishing the Maldives Intellectual Property Office and creating the institutional infrastructure for IP registration. The Trademark Act will come into force on 11 November 2026, introducing formal trademark registration procedures, professional examination standards, and comprehensive enforcement mechanisms aligned with global best practices.
