Maldives does not have any trademark law. Protection for trademarks is acquired by way of common law. Companies that want to obtain trademark protection should publish cautionary notices in a leading newspaper in Maldives. In this way, as per common law, the public at large is made aware of the sole ownership/proprietorship of the mark and in case of any infringement, the same may be brought to the notice of the Court during any legal proceedings.

In theory, a cautionary notice does not lapse, but if a trademark owner wants to maintain their reputation in relation to the mark, then it is suggested to republish the notice at least every 2 years.
